Nutrition is a niche in Mental Health that is severely neglected, yet can have one of the most profound impacts on one's emotional well-being. Put simply, what you eat directly affects the structure and function of your brain, and, ultimately, your mood. Research studies have shown significant improvement in major depression via dietary intervention, and it is no wonder "culinary medicine" is a burgeoning new field. My goal is to help you understand, from a molecular standpoint, how high quality foods affect our ability to think and feel. I provide guidance and accountability throughout this program so that you will see results and create life-long habits. It involves medical workup for nutritional deficiencies and supplement recommendations if necessary. We will also look at herbal remedies for common mental health symptoms and get out of the office for pantry makeovers, shopping and food prep.
I personally struggled with being overweight since 5th grade. Although I loved myself, I didn't love where my body was in terms of the way I looked or felt. Midway through high school I started a transformation in which I gained control, and although its been a journey, over time I've found the right balance of mindfulness, intuitive eating and exercise...and I am all the better for it. I can now look back and be grateful for where that path has led me. It can be difficult for teens to have the right support in areas such as this; not to the extreme of an eating disorder but also not satisfied with the current situation. And God knows it's a sticky situation for parents to be in! It would be an honor to be the extra person in your teens' life guiding them through this particular challenge. I know firsthand that this phase can truly end up being one of the biggest blessings in disguise for a healthy, confident, and self-disciplined future and way of life.
As the Medical Director of a residential treatment center, I've seen firsthand the negative effects of substance abuse and dependency on individuals and their families. I've also noticed there is a gap in services along with some "black and white" thinking when it comes to treatment recommendations amongst the chemical dependency therapeutic community. I find that there is a significant need for guidance of folks who are somewhere in the middle; questioning if they have a problem, perhaps told by concerned family members to "cut back", maybe noticing changes in energy, motivation and productivity; but at the same time, not wanting or willing to take a hiatus from drinking all together. This is where The Drinking Plan comes into play. It's a weekly coaching program to help people be accountable to moderating their alcohol intake. Know someone who might be interested?
